Outdoor Orientation Program

About Outdoor Orientation Program

Outdoor Orientation Program is not a club, but is a great program for First-Year Spartans to take advantage of. Through Outdoor Orientation Program trips and programs you will have opportunities to meet new people, develop a sense of community on campus, and have some memorable adventures along the way. Since most of the trips require no previous experience, it makes it that much easier for students to challenge and grow themselves through adventure!

Outdoor Orientation Program is housed in the Student Recreation Center and has four main program aspects: Spartan Outdoor Orientation Program (specifically for incoming first-year students at UNCG),  Adventure TripsRental & Trip Center (outdoor equipment rental), and The Edge (indoor climbing wall). Please read more about the program below and always feel free to stop in to the Outdoor Orientation Program Rental & Trip Center or Climbing Wall to speak with one of the many friendly staff members that will be eager to tell you more about the opportunities available at Outdoor Orientation Program. Also, visit our Facebook page to check out tons of photos from our trips.

Spartan Outdoor Orientation Program

The Spartan Outdoor Orientation Program (SOOP) is sponsored by UNCG Outdoor Adventures, the outdoor education and recreation program within the Department of Campus Recreation. SOOP is a unique program designed for first-year students at UNCG. We utilize adventure and outdoor recreation experiences to assist new students in bridging the gap from high school to college while building a strong community with fellow first-year students. Previous experience is NOT required for any of the programs, so this is a perfect opportunity to try something new! Please read through the following information to learn more about the different programs, costs, and how to register. Please visit the Spartan Outdoor Orientation website for more information on dates and how to register!

Adventure Trips

The Adventure Trips and Clinics Program provides an opportunity for the UNCG community to participate and explore various outdoor recreation opportunities. Trips venture all over the Southeast United States with the occasional trip heading to other domestic and international destinations. The majority of the trips and clinics are designed with the beginner in mind – providing many opportunities to learn and participate in different outdoor activities. Trips and clinics are offered in, but not limited to: Backpacking, Canoeing, Caving, Hiking, Rock Climbing, Sea Kayaking, Whitewater Kayaking and Rafting. Adventure trips and clinics are led by student and professional staff members trained to provide each participant with a safe, enjoyable, and memorable outdoor adventure. The current trip calendar is available here. Space is limited, be sure to register early!
