The First-Year Summer Read is designed to introduce new students to the intellectual life of UNCG. The First-Year Summer Read, offered through New Student & Spartan Family Programs, is an opportunity for new students to become immersed into the UNCG academic environment prior to arriving on campus in the fall. Students have the opportunity to read a FYSR book and engage in curricular and co-curricular learning through classroom discussions and special programs.
The First-Year Summer Read is a dynamic program offered to new, incoming UNCG students that provides:
- An introduction to academic expectations and intellectual engagement;
- A common experience with peers and faculty;
- Opportunities for self-reflection, critical thinking, and community involvement;
- A powerful, meaningful, and fun experience in a student’s first year.
The First-Year Summer Read supports the university’s mission by fostering intellectual inquiry to prepare students for meaningful lives and engaged citizenship. The First-Year Summer Read aims to support a collaborative effort on-campus and in the surrounding community to bring about a combined positive effect enhancing student learning, success, and retention.
